For transportation we use walking, cars, bikes, scooters, trucks, vans, school buses, and we have one city bus that comes from Waterloo that will take you to the city. Many people in our area work there. In Heidelberg there is a feed mill that makes feed for livestock. Next to Home Hardware, the main industry in St. Jacobs is tourism. What natural resources are in your community?
There is a river that runs through St. Jacobs. It probably was one of the resources that attracted settlers to this area along with the rich farm land. When the early settlers arrived in this area, they built a mill next to the river. The mill has now been changed into tourist shops. There is a trail next to the river where people can walk and enjoy the nature around them. There is open land used for crops and farming. Land is also used for market gardening and there is an apple farm as well where there are many apple orchards. There are forests that are used for tapping maple trees for sap to make maple syrup. There are also gravel pits in our area where the gravel is dug out of the ground.
What kinds of buildings are in St.Jacobs?
There are churches, our school, fire station, medical clinic, post office, bank, corner store, an office building, many tourist shops, a printery, a very large warehouse, an arena and community centre, houses including both single detached homes and semi-detached homes, retirement homes, a theatre (for play productions), a small library, a gas station and a car repair shop, some small industrial buildings, ...we may have to add more as we think of them! We thought of more...the yummiest building is Tim Hortons! Other buildings are restaurants, small hotels, stores, and the Farmer's Market.
What do you do in case of emergencies? Do you have a hospital? Do you have a local police service? Firestations? Ambulance?
